Care
of Your DuraScoop®
We
have designed the DuraScoop to last. However,
don't expect your scoop to stay shiny and like-new forever. After
all, it's for digging clumps out of cat litter! Like an aluminum
garden trowel — or any other tool designed for rugged use
— the DuraScoop will gradually scuff and lose its brightness
(Although, we have been using our production sample for months and
it still looks pretty good.). We recommend you just use it, enjoy
it, and forget about it. Hang it on a convenient hook out of site
— one near each litter box in your home.
If
you must,
you can polish your DuraScoop with a buffing wheel and a buffing
compond such as tripoli or rouge. You can also try one of several
aluminum metal polishes on the market and 0000 grade steel wool.
The DuraScoop is 100% solid aluminum alloy with no plated finish
of any kind, so minor scratches and dulling can be buffed
out to restore the original luster.
Disinfecting:
We
have gotten questions from Foster Pet Parents about whether or not
the DuraScoop will corrode if exposed to bleach used for disinfecting.
Our findings show that a mild, diluted bleach solution or bleach
cleaner will not harm or discolor the DuraScoop which is solid,
uncoated aluminum. The
Center for Disease Control recommends a 1:100 dilution of household
bleach (or 1/4 cup bleach to 1 gallon tap water) to prevent the
spread of infectious disease.
DO
NOT place your DuraScoop in pure bleach right from the
bottle. It will oxidize rapidly if exposed to concentrated bleach
solution and turn a nasty, pitted looking gray. Even so, the DuraScoop
will not "rust" like a steel scoop.
Dishwasher
Cleaning: If you must, you can wash
the DuraScoop in the dishwasher, but don't expect it to remain shiny.
It will turn gray from oxidation. Most dishwasher detergents contain
chlorine bleach or some other oxidizing agent. If you have ever
washed aluminum kitchen utensils in the dishwasher, then you know
what we are talking about.
